A Tribute to Sandy

Sandy was a beautiful cocker spaniel who entered the Agape Animal Rescue program in 2005. She was adopted by an amazing family and lived like a queen. She recently passed away and we received this special letter from her family. Please join us in celebrating Sandy’s life.

In June of 2005 we lost one of our babies, Frosty, due to kidney failure. We were so lost even though we still had Dusty and Mollie. In August of the same year I felt like we needed to adopt another baby so I went onto petfinder.com and found Sandy with Agape Animal Rescue. I just knew when I first saw her that she needed to be with us. While visiting Tennessee in September I was able to schedule an appointment to meet her. She won my heart over that day. Doug and I arranged to meet Debbie the next weekend to pick Sandy up. Even though Sandy was a little afraid to go, and I could not blame her, she did. Adopting Sandy was one of the best decisions we have made. When we got home Sandy automatically knew she was the alpha dog and this was a perfect fit since Mollie was so passive with her. Dusty adjusted to her in the house as well. Other than a few seizures and a couple of strokes over the years Sandy was in great health.

In late December 2015 we noticed she had developed a cough but it was not often enough to cause alarm. On January 6, 2016 while at the groomers she started coughing a lot and was not able to stand up by herself. After bringing her home I immediately took her to the vet. Sandy was diagnosed with congestive heart failure. We were devastated. She was put on 3 different medications and the vet said as long as they were working there was no reason Sandy would not be with us for a while.

Sadly, the medications didn’t work that long. On February 6, 2016 she got up and I immediately noticed she wasn’t doing well. She was coughing a lot and I could hear her lungs filing up with fluid so I called the vet. That day we had to make one of the worst decisions a pet owner has to make but we knew we had done all we possibly could. We lost a best friend but God gained one. She was almost 17 years old and we enjoyed every year of her life.

I am writing this letter to urge people to STOP breeding and buying from puppy mills and pet stores. Please visit your local shelter or rescue and adopt your next animal. Please STOP abusing animals as they can be your very best friend if you let them. I don’t know how people can look into an animals eyes and abuse them in any way shape or form. All I can say is they must not have a heart.

I wanted to write this letter to let everyone know that we miss Sandy terribly and our lives are not the same without her. I hope everyone can enjoy their babies as much as we have.

Thank you Agape for letting Sandy come into our lives. We have never regretted it for one moment.
